A new face on an old friend.

Taking on the messaging and web design of an architect? Gird yourself; you’ll need some fortitude. Luckily, I have that. Plus, working with clients equally passionate about the creative process is rare and beautiful thing. And so it was with Pappageorge Haymes Partners.

THE BRIEF

Pappageorge Haymes is a Chicago architecture firm true to its Midwestern roots: thoughtful and determined, if not a bit modest. For three decades, the firm saw steady growth with minimal marketing and a Web 1.0 site. But continued success hinges on attracting top talent — not an easy thing to do in the digital age without a compelling web presence.

With their 30th anniversary on the horizon, it was the perfect time to correct course. With a history of success branding the buildings PHP designed, the agencywon the RFP to create a new messaging framework and web experience as Pappageorge Haymes greeted their next 30 years.

MESSAGING

The first to-do was to develop a vision, mission, and messaging framework to support the new site and drive future recruiting and business development initiatives. With as many partners as practice areas, we knew the traditional vision and mission weren’t going to cut it.

And as far as architects go, what works today needs to work ten years from now, and there shouldn’t be too much repair work if everyone has done their job right. They wanted the same of their messaging and, to a lesser extent, website.

With these constraints in mind, we proposed a framework they could adapt and modify as time passed without impacting the integrity of the approach. Instead of the usual pie-in-the-sky over-promising, we anchored around the principles by which the firm chose its projects – as advocates, caretakers, collaborators, placemakers.

SITE DESIGN

When we began the project, the firm hadn’t invested many resources in their brand. They felt strongly about their logo mark and primary color, but otherwise were open to new ideas. As an organization, they were at the vanguard of adaptive reuse, embracing an architectural style that embraces architecture that works. They prefer function and thoughtful, elegant details over flair.

With this in mind, we took a grid driven approach, with cues from the firm's efficient architectural style. Clean lines. Clear purpose. Like a well-designed building, it's easy to find your destination because the framework is thoughtful, well researched, and grounded in how a user interacts with the space.
