Transforming A City Through Art

Followers of immersive theater over the last few decades are perhaps familiar with Redmoon Theater, once a darling of Chicago set to take over the world. Redmoon's admirable mission was to bring arts and culture (vis-à-vis live, interactive theater) into Chicago's most underserved communities.

The ragtag team of pranksters staged family-friendly Grands Guignols on Chicago's streets, in its parks, lakes, and (most notoriously) namesake river. Acrobats. Musicians. Tractors converted into extravagant, steampunk calliopes. Disturbingly tall ladders.

Critics fawned, White House appearances were made, and as audiences grew, so too did Redmoon's vision.

THE BRIEF

As with every non-profit, continued funding was crucial to Redmoon’s success. Having recently moved into a larger space, they planned a fundraiser to end all fundraisers.

But before giving away their money, philanthropists want to know there’s a workable vision and strategy in place. And while Redmoon had the vision, they needed help up-leveling their fundraising materials. The agency was engaged to deliver a microsite and printed prospectus that told the Redmoon story and presented the growth strategy.

THE APPROACH

We wanted an approach as grand as Redmoon's vision but on the limited budget of a non-profit. So to keep print costs low, we limited the color palette but amplified the contrast. On the microsite, we drastically limited integrations and interactivity. Instead, we focused on ensuring the copy content — the nuts and bolts of the plan — was easy to digest.

While the limited colors were initially a major concern (fire? in black and white?), they ended up working in our favor, defining the character of the work. The result is a vibrant, graphic approach to telling the Redmoon story and communicating their guiding principles.
